record, play, overdub: 1 button midi controller

Hello All, I searched for this question but didn’t find my answer.
I have an MC8 Pro midi controller (that’s probably TMI), and I’d like to set up 1 button to start recordering a clip, then hit again to play, then again for overdub, again for stop overdub, again for another overdub, repeat ….(I use a different button to stop, then start that clip) I’m moving from a RC505 MKII. I can tap iPad clip to record/play, then it turns into stop/play, and two finger tap can overdub. basically trying to emulate RC505 where I have 1 midi cc to rec/play/overdub and a different midi cc to start and stop that same track/clip. thanks

Set up a stepped dial with the steps in those order and set up a midi binding to nudge the dial one step.

  • I think this does what you want:

The first button has two actions

    1. Play/Stop:
      • Action: Toggle
      • Record If Empty: ON
      • Record Setup > After Recording: Play
    2. Record:
      • Action: Toggle
      • If Clip Has Audio: Overdub

After adding the actions, tap the circle at the left of the second one and change from After Last to Next Trigger

    Second button

    1. Play/Stop:
      • Action: Toggle
      • Record if Empty: Off

oops! I misread what you want. What @wim said is correct. For the record button you might want to choose the option, play if stopped, overdub if playing

  • thank you both, I’m making progress ;)
